No study of Lightning Bolt surfboards is complete without a few words about Lopez Model or Lopez Design surfboards.
These are boards that were shaped by someone other than Gerry Lopez -- with its design attributed to Lopez. Similarly, Tiger Woods model golf clubs are not hand made by Tiger -- but like Lopez Model surfboards, it commands respect in the marketplace because of the celebrity name value.
Most commonly, these boards have cursive writing on their decks in what appears to be Lopez signatures along with key words such as Bolt, Power, Pure Source and so forth. This, however, is purely artistic expression done by creative glassers rather than Lopez's actual signature.
Some licensees used laminates, which eliminated the need for glassers to write "Gerry Lopez" on their boards. We have two Lopez Model boards on display in the Surfboard Gallery. |
