On September 1, 1970, Gerry Lopez and Jack Shipley opened Lightning Bolt Unlimited Surf Company in Honolulu.

With limited financial resources, this bold start-up enlisted the help of Lopez's board-building friends for consignments.

Together, with the surf shop expertise of Shipley, the company quickly grew into the leading surfboard shop in the islands.
